5 Must-Know Yacht Etiquette Rules

So, you’ve been invited on your friend’s yacht charter holiday…lucky you.

You’ve packed your swimsuit, excursion outfit, and are RWA for the best vacation you’ve had in a long time.

Before you step foot on the finely polished teak deck, you may want to brush up on your yacht etiquette to look and act like you’ve been on yachts your whole life.

Thank You!

As you may already know, yacht charters are not cheap. Depending on the size of the yacht, a week can run between $50, 000 and $500,000. Of course, you're grateful for the invitation to set sail on an amazing yacht and the proper thing to do is thank your host for the gracious inclusion. For this reason and because yacht charters include all accommodations, food, entertainment, and excursions, the thing to do is buy your host/hostess a fabulous gift. And we're not talking about a bottle of wine or fancy candle. Think Tiffany, Cartier, or Hermes. Think of the amount of money your host/hostess is spending to charter the yacht so you can share an amazing time with them and then buy an equally special and timeless gift hee/she will remember you by.

No Shoes

Although we love a good Louboutin or Jimmy Choo stiletto as much as the next jetsetter, wearing heels or for that matter platforms, espadrilles, or any shoes on a yacht is a no-no. The best way to look like you've been on one before (even though this may be your first time) is by knowing while on a yacht, you walk either only barefoot or with socks. That doesn't mean you leave your heels or cute flip flops at home. Bring them for excursions and for any reason when you're not onboard.

Dinner is Served

No matter how famished you maybe, if you're at the table ready to eat any meal of the day, it is proper yacht etiquette to wait until your host/hostess is also seated at the table before you begin to consume that scrumptious dish.

Bonus

Something we don't think we should mention...but we will just in case. Always remember your manners. This can include but not be limited to dressing appropriately; respecting the crew and captain, and being time conscious of when events, excursions, and meals are scheduled.

Saluti

A bottle of good red wine and a filet go together like Champagne and strawberries. While you're on a yacht you can have your strawberries, Champaign, and wine, just not red wine or other colorful drinks, at least not in the interior. If you're as much as a wine lover as we are, there are several white wines we recommend enjoying while in your cabin or the main salon, like the Sigalas Assyrtiko Santorini, Garofoli ‘Macrina’ Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, or Claude Riffault ‘Les Boucauds’ Sancerre.

Offshore

One of the perks sailing on a yacht is the excursions. Excursions may vary and include dining and drinking onshore. Keep in mind, it is customary for the host/hostess to pay for dinner. Although you want to show your gratitude, don't offer to pick up the tab. It is actually considered an insult if you do. And if your host/hostess thinks it's rude that you do not offer to buy dinner, then it's probably their first time on a yacht. Instead, if you venture elsewhere following dinner for dessert or drinks, offer to pay as it is also customary for guests of a yacht charter to pay for after-dinner festivities, should you change venues.

Above all, it is mandatory to have an incredible time on a yacht charter because it’s a very special experience;

one we hope you’re able to enjoy again and again.
